DIY Indoor Garden Wall

I’ve really been looking forward to Spring decorating this year! A few months ago I had a totally out of the box idea and I had the best time making my idea come to life this week! Today I am going to walk you through how I created a faux garden wall and indoor trellis in our living room!

Do you have an empty wall in your home that you’re never quite sure what to do with? Why not create a DIY Indoor faux garden wall?

DIY Garden Wall

The wall I used was 12ft long by 9.6 ft tall but you don’t need a large wall to recreate this in your home! This can be done on any size wall because you get to choose how small or large your trellis is going to be!

I love thinking outside the box when it comes to decorating my home and I love using three-dimensional items to bring in texture and interest!

To get started on your indoor trellis, you’ll need the following materials:

  • Nylon String – I used white string because my walls are white and I wanted the string to disappear into the background.
  • Small Nails (or tacks if you’re making a smaller trellis)
  • Measuring Tape
  • Hammer
  • Faux Ivy Garland and/or Faux Olive Garland (really you could use whatever faux greenery you like)
  • Grapevines
  • Floral Wire

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR OUTLINE

The first thing I did was decide how far apart I wanted the trellis (strings) to be. I went with 16 inches apart because I wanted to cover my entire wall. I measured and put a nail across the top of my shiplap every 16 inches and the same down below just above my baseboards. I once all the string was attached from top to bottom I added in the nails along the side of the walls making sure to keep my measurement of 16 inches apart from the other strings.

STEP2: CREATE YOUR TRELLIS

When you have all your nails in place, grab your nylon string. Attach the string to the first nail at the top of your wall by tying a loop at the end of the string. Bring the string down and across making sure to skip 2 nails (to the right or left). That way you will create a diamond shape on your wall with the string.

STEP3: ADD ALL THE GREENERY

After all your strings are up and it’s looking how you want it, you’re ready to start attaching the faux greenery! I used faux ivy garland, faux olive garland, and real grapevines. I started by attaching the ivy first using small (2 in.) pieces of floral wire.

Once all the ivy was up I randomly added little bits of the faux olive garland to make it a little fuller here and there.

STEP 4: ADD THE FINAL TOUCHES

The last step was to add the grapevines! Adding a real element to this faux wall really makes the faux greenery look so much more lifelike! Before I added the grapevines, I soaked them in water for a couple of hours. Soaking them beforehand made them way more pliable and so much easier to work with!

I wanted it to be a little a-symmetrical and look as natural as possible so I attached the greenery and grapevines in a totally random way making sure that it didn’t look TOO perfect!

Even though this indoor garden wall is not something you see every day…

I LOVE it!

Sure, it may not be your normal spring decor idea but I hope it encourages and inspires you to think about trying something new and to really make your home a place that you love!
