Christmas Cottage Home Tour – The Main Floor

Merry Christmas everyone! This year we are celebrating our fifth…yes 5 Christmases at Fletcher Creek Cottage so I couldn’t let the season go by without sharing a Christmas Cottage Home Tour with you all! Even though we’ve broken ground on our Dream Home, I think we will most likely be in the cottage for one more Christmas after this. I think it would take a Christmas miracle for us to DIY build our entire dream home in only one year. It’s almost 4 times the square footage of the cottage (and that took us one year)…so if we finish by 2023 we’ll be doing good!

Anyway, back to our Christmas Cottage home tour! I have two very different categories of decor. First, let’s tour our main level! It’s decorated with lots of neutrals and natural elements like garland, trees, pinecones, berry sprigs, candles, rustic antiques, and things that seamlessly go with our home decor.

We’ve always had a real tree, but last year my husband broke down and decided it was ok for me to get a faux tree for our living room…only because this tree looks SO real! Our faux tree is the prelit, 9′ Balsam Hill Fraser Fir and its foliage is designed with 40 different tip variations molded from real Fraser fir branches. He was impressed and I was too.

I wanted this tree to have kind of a “Woodland” feel so I decorated the tree with things found in nature like pinecones and dried orange slices. Then I added some ornaments that I handmade out of pheasant feathers and other ones I’d made using clay. I tied on some cinnamon sticks to make it smell festive and added lots of black and mustard color bows using velvet ribbon. I also added my favorite Glass Icicle ornaments from Bronners Christmas store that we got our first Christmas after getting married (20 years ago). They sparkle so much and I just love them!

In the kitchen, I kept it simple but continued the “nature” theme by adding lots of Christmas trees to my open shelving, two little ones near the sink and then one more with fairy lights on the kitchen island. I didn’t go overboard, but I had to make a small Hot Chocolate Bar with a jar of candy canes for the kids to enjoy!

I love bringing out some of my favorite antiques for Christmas. I used my vintage sleigh bench under the tree, an old handmade wooden snow shovel on the porch, and hung three runner sleds on the wall in the living room!

One area I love really decorating for Christmas is this simple wood shelf. I built it because we don’t have a fireplace and I wanted to have a mantel to decorate. This year I added a few vintage brass candlesticks on one end, run a few strands of faux garland, and then added my large Christmas sign in the center. I hung some old snowshoes up on either side and hung our chunky knit stockings on one end.

Christmas Cottage Home Tour- The Loft Space

Our family room/ loft space is completely different. Up there I decorate using lots of colors, handmade items, family heirlooms, and colorful stockings I made when our kids were really young. We decorate the fresh-cut family tree with all the colorful ornaments we’ve made or collected through the years! You know the ones…Every single ornament has a special significance it represents or a memory attached with it! Some make us laugh and some bring tears to our eyes when we remember back to when our kids were so small and we realize how fast they’ve grown. We have such a fun time taking each ornament out and reminiscing together!

I built another shelf for the loft last year and decorated it with our nativity set that was passed down to me by a family member. The stockings here are the ones I made for our family when we first had our kids and these are the ones Santa fills!

We have a vintage ceramic little Christmas tree that lights up on the desk that my husband’s grandmother made in ceramics class years and years ago.

Most years, when we have time, we unbox my son’s vintage Lionel train set and set it up around the tree. This year we just didn’t have the time to do it before Christmas, but maybe we’ll get it out for a day and get it running again during Christmas break. My father-in-law received the train set for Christmas when he was six years old and he kept it in pristine condition. He passed it down to my husband, who later passed it down to our son and it’s always fun to get it out and set it up.
