Spring is such a beautiful time of year! Everything feels new and fresh. We get the urge to declutter and are looking for simple ways to decorate for spring. Here are a few of my favorite budget friendly ways to freshen up the home for spring!

Before any decorating can happen, I have to declutter and clean. Spring cleaning looks different for all of us. But when the snow melts here in northern Michigan all I want to do is deep clean everything. After months of snow and being cooped up too much, spring cleaning is literally a breath of fresh air! As I clean, I also declutter. I like to pack away anything that reminds me of the colder months. Things like thick throw blankets, knitted pillow covers, winter artwork and what not.
Lighten Up The Space By Swapping Out Your Throw Pillows
A great way to transition from winter to spring is to to swap heavy or knit pillow covers. I replace them with covers that are lighter and much more appropriate for the spring and summer months.

Choosing pillow covers made from linen or patters with stripes lightens up a space. Maybe a floral cotton or even a textured basket weave always makes my home freshened up! I’ve invested in quality throw pillow inserts over the years. I like to carve out time to sew pillow with some new seasonal fabric that I fell in love. If you know how to sew, the sky is the limit for what you can come up with. I love swapping out all the pillow covers on my sofas and chairs for that reason. Check out my pillow cover sewing post HERE and video HERE for some ideas.
If you want to go one step further…swapping out other items like your shower curtain, kitchen dishcloths and bathroom hand towels. This is another really simple way to decorate for spring while staying in budget!
Decorate for Spring with Artwork and Prints
This is by far my most used decorating tip. I have a collection of antique frames that I love to hang around our home. Every season I simply swap out my framed prints (and original art) for artwork that is seasonal.

This eliminates storing extra frames and I’m not making more holes in my walls each season. I’m not reinventing the wheel with decorating. I’m just taking out my winter scene and replacing it with a painting or print that’s much more spring like.

Most of my artwork is (download) from Etsy and printed onto a canvas. I have also painted some artwork myself with acrylics.

Adding Greenery is a Must for Spring Decorating
Of course adding a fresh bouquet or flower arrangement is wonderful for spring if you can. When fresh flowers aren’t possible. It’s a lot more affordable to invest in live plants for the areas where there is plenty of sunlight!

We especially love using terracotta pots with herbs in the kitchen. I also add faux or dried floral arrangements to my mantel and dining table. I really like adding faux topiaries or small trees. of course, try using them in rooms where they won’t get enough sunlight for a live plant.

It feels more like spring when I to stick with florals like tulips, lavender, peonies. Flowers that bloom in the spring are my go- to!
Freshen Up Your Mantel and Shelving
The mantel is a great place to add spring decor. Try adding layers of framed artwork or mirrors along with potted plants, decorative pottery or vases. I love using baskets to store things like mail and extra odds and ends. It’s a great way to hide anything small that isn’t pretty just sitting out on the desk or shelving. Baskets are a really great way to add a woven texture to your space for spring.

Decorate for Spring with a new Tablescape or Centerpiece
Spring tablescapes don’t have to be over the top or complicated. Try adding a floral, linen stripped, or textured woven table runner or maybe these rattan placemats. Maybe layer a lace runner over a tablecloth for a simple but natural elegant look. I almost always have a simple flower arrangement in the center once my flowers start popping up in the garden!

If you have lighter dinnerware, now is the time to bring that out too! My family gifted me these new dishes for Mothers Day last year! I love using them so much in the spring and summer months. They’re at such a great price point, I think I’ll add more to my collection this year!

Beautiful dinnerware and silverware is something I keep an eye out for at antique or second hand shops. I find so many beautiful platters and pitchers when I’m antiquing for only a few dollars! I’ve scored two silver sets for very affordable prices. I love this beautiful floral silver set and it’s really fun to use in the spring and summertime!
Decorate Your Porch for Spring
Adding a spring wreath to your front door is one of the most affordable and simple ways to decorate! There are loads of gorgeous handmade wreaths out there. Some can run upwards of $100-200, but I’ve made spring wreaths for a fraction of that ($20).

All you need is a wreath form and a few of your favorite faux or dried greens and florals. I love using grapevine forms in the spring and just adding either eucalyptus or other greens with little flowers throughout.

Use Nature to Decorate for Spring
I love foraging my backyard for branches. The arrangements I come up with feel whimsical and it’s free! Once those flowers begin to bloom on your trees, don’t shy away from making your own floral arrangements. Add them to your table or kitchen island. They don’t lasts more than a few days at a time. But they smell divine and like I said, they’re FREE!

Freshen Up Your Welcome Mats
Swapping out accent rugs and welcome mats in your entryway, hallway, kitchen or bathroom can make a huge difference. Yes, rugs can be an investment, but they don’t have to be.

Rugs can be an oversight sometimes. They get so worn down over time and start looking ratty. We get used to seeing them so we don’t notice until we bring in a new, fresh rug. Then realized that was really all our space needed. I’ve had great luck finding smaller spring rugs at Home Goods and I love my washable runner rug from Ruggable. It’s held up really well for years (even with 2 kids and 2 dogs)!
I’m so excited for spring after nearly five months of winter! I can’t wait to get started decluttering and decorating the cottage for spring! I hope these simple swaps inspire you to easily freshen up your home this Spring!
