The Fixer+Upper, German Schmear Home!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stay in one of the beautiful homes that Chip and Joanna Gaines transformed on any one of the 5 seasons of their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper?! I know I have! When my husband and I decided that a trip to Waco Texas would be our Christmas gift to each other this year, I knew right away we should book one of the fixer-uppers to stay in. I was really surprised at how many of the homes from the show are now Airbnbs!!! I really didn’t want to travel all the way to Texas and not have the full Fixer Upper experience! So today I am sharing all the ins and outs of where we stayed, The German Schmear Home!
This was our first time staying in an Airbnb and guys, I highly recommend it! The whole prosses was super easy and the homeowners, Jeff and Sara made our stay so comfortable! They had even set out cookies for us and brochures of super helpful information on all things Waco, TX like where to eat, shop and sightsee! We had the best time waving at all the tourist that passed by on the Waco Tour buss and the entire time we felt like we were on the set of Fixer+Upper!!! It really was super cool!
This home is known for its exterior which is absolutely gorgeous for sure, but the kitchen is every bit as AMAZING! I probably took a couple hundred pics of this kitchen you guys! You know that I live in a small cottage with a very small kitchen so this kitchen felt like a commercial size kitchen for me! Haha! I kept thinking this would be the BEST place ever for a girls weekend!!!
Seriously though…check out this KITCHEN!!! I mean talk about incredible design! One of the reasons I chose to stay here was because of the beautiful design details such as the kitchen pantry and the light fixtures! I think my favorite feature is the pantry! I love how Joanna chose to frost the glass on the pantry doors! This is definitely a design idea I am going to incorporate into our farmhouse build!
Chip and Joanna kept so much of the character of this older home and made all the millwork POP with all the rich paint colors! They even added beautiful trim work in the front foyer and matched it above the fireplace!
One of the things I loved most about this home was the layout! The way they used the space was phenomenal! The entire home has a fantastic flow and an open feel while still having each spaced defined really well! I love how Chip and Joanna added two barn doors with glass to separate the mudroom/laundry space/office space while still allowing the light from the exterior french doors to shine into the kitchen!
This home was so large that we really could have had 3 other couples join us and we all would have had plenty of space and privacy! This home is HUGE!
It also has a large backyard with plenty of furniture and a firepit and grill! Even though the home is in town, it does have a lot of privacy because the large backyard is completely fenced in!
Chip and Joanna paid so much attention to detail in this home that everywhere you look is stunning! I loved the uniqueness of how they finished out the staircase and railing and all the grandeur of the foyer! It felt like I was walking right into the show when we entered this home! I kept saying to my husband “this is so crazy cool”!
I was really surprised at how similar it looked still to when this episode aired! A few small things were different, but all in all, it really looked like we were at the reveal of a fixer upper!! The only thing that would have made it better is if Chip and Jo were there to welcome us in…Haha!!!
We had such a great time at the German Schmear home and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Waco and loves all things Fixer Upper and Magnolia as much as I do! This home could easily accommodate a very large family or a group of girlfriends or even up to 4 couples! Since it was just the two of us and we were not splitting the bill with friends, the price was a little higher than we’d normally spend at just above 300 a night. But if you shared it with friends it would be really budget friendly and WAY better than staying in a hotel! Another positive is you can’t beat the location! We were just around the corner from the original MAGNOLIA shop on Bosque, but it wasn’t loud at all! The neighborhood is absolutely beautiful!
Visiting Magnolia Market, Silos, Bakery, Magnolia Table, Harp Design Co., and all things Fixer Upper has been a dream of mine for years! I am SO glad we decided to go the Airbnb route and stay in an HGTV Fixer Upper! Next time we visit I am going to try and book one that is on the outskirts of town and has a more rural feeling!
I totally enjoyed all that Waco had to offer, but if I could change one thing it’d be that we spent more time seeing the landscape out in the country! Texas and Michigan have such different landscape so I would have really enjoyed seeing more of it! We’ll definitely be returning to Texas again, maybe next time we’ll bring the kids!
1 Samuel 25:6 And thus you shall greet him: ‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.
